Fuegos de San Juan
Fires of Saint John
flute (+alto flute), Bb clarinet (+bass clarinet), horn, mezzosoprano, female choir, harp, percussion and thirteen strings
Premiered in 1985 at Guildhall School of Music by Guildhall New Music Ensemble and Voices, conducted by Buxton Orr.
I wrote this work in my first year as a student at the Guildhall School of Music. It is a setting of one of my all time favourite poets Giorgos Seferis, which describes the pagan rituals on the longest day of the year in the village of Skala in the island of Cephalonia.
